Really Strange. Ran your examples a couple of times on my Box. 
Not seeing any problems you are reporting here, except FAIL when 
/lp_func/ got executed first...

Do you run the test program in a Xterm? 
Did you tried on a basic TTY (For instance, tty1?)

I'll do some thinkings right now... 
Maybe I'll come with a program that could help us to track down
what's going on.
